Prostrations

In Buddhism, prostration is a way of showing veneration for the Three Jewels (including the Buddha, his teachings (the Dharma), and the spiritual community (the Sangha)) and sometimes also other objects of veneration.

For Buddhist practitioners, prostration has multiple, overlapping benefits including :

an experience of giving or veneration
an act to purify oneself from filth, especially vanity.
a preparatory act for meditation
an act that accumulates merits

In some practices, such as the Ngöndro, each prostration is performed simultaneously with the recitation of a prayer and a visualisation (e.g. the tree of refuge of his practice lineage).

Nyung Nes Ritual

The practice of Nyung-nes is very common and practised in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Often it follows the Losar, the New Year, because the first lunar month is considered extremely auspicious and the benefits of any action are multiplied during this period. The blessings and benefits of this practice, as stated by the Buddha himself, are immense.

This practice is based on the development of love and compassion by means of the support that is the pure manifestation of Chenrezi with a thousand arms. Those who participate become retreatants, take the monk's vows for two days and stay on site mainly to avoid distraction and also accidentally cause the death of living beings such as insects.

The ritual takes place over two days:
   - a first day "Nyéné" of young partial, with breakfast and lunch. After this meal there is no more solid food. Speech is moderate;
   - the second day "Nyungné" of total fasting and complete silence (except for chanting and recitation of mantras together in the temple).
   - The practice of a Nyungne over 2 days ends in the morning of the third day after breakfast taken together.

The practice of Chenrezi with a thousand arms is performed three times during the day: +-6am, then around 10am and a third time around 3pm. The ritual includes singing, mantra recitations and prostrations. For all those who can, joining in this ritual is of great benefit. The practice is open to all.

Mantra recitation

A mantra is a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phonemes, or group of words in different languages believed by practitioners to have religious, magical or spiritual powers.Some mantras have a syntactic structure and literal meaning, while others do not.
Here is a brief list of mantras.

OM VAGISHVARA HUM: The mantra of the Mahabodhisattva Manjusri.
OM VAJRASATTVA HUM: The short mantra for White Vajrasattva.
OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM: The mantra of the Vajraguru Guru Padma Sambhava, Guru Rinpoche.
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE MAMA AYU PUNYE JNANA PUKTRIM KURU SVAHA (Karma Kagyu): The mantra of Dölkar or White Tara.
OM TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA: The mantra of Green Arya Tara—Jetsun Dolma or Tara, the Mother of the Buddhas.
OṂ AMARAṆI JĪVANTAYE SVĀHĀ: The mantra of the Buddha of limitless life: the Buddha Amitayus in celestial form.
OM AMI DEWA HRI: The mantra of the Buddha Amitabha.
OM MUNI MUNI MAHA MUNIYE SAKYAMUNI SWAHA: The mantra of Buddha Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha.

Amitabha ritual

Amitābha is a Buddha of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism.

He reigns over the "Pure Western Land of Bliss" (Dewatchen:Tibetan), a wonderful world, pure, perfect, devoid of evil and suffering. This pure land, a place of refuge outside the cycle of transmigrations - or the equivalent of nirvāņa according to certain conceptions - is at the centre of the beliefs and practices of the Pure Land schools.

Amitabha Buddha is often represented in the aspect of the Emanation Body.
He makes the mudra of meditation, the Dhyana Mudra, and holds a bowl of alms filled with the nectar of wisdom, symbolising his goodness to give vast and profound instructions to beings. The alms bowl represents wisdom and non-attachment. It refers to the fact that the monks go every morning to beg for their food from the laity in exchange for prayers, the bowl is also one of the few traditional objects they possess together with the monastic vestments.
It is covered with the three pieces of religious clothing: a shirt and trousers as underwear, and a cloth (Zen) as clothing, which correspond respectively to the 3 trainings: discipline, meditative concentration and transcendental knowledge.
It bears the major marks and minor signs of a fully awakened manifestation of Nirmanakaya. The perfection of the Buddha's state is expressed in the characteristics of his body, to which 32 major marks and 80 minor signs are traditionally attributed.

His mantra is OM AMI DEWA HRI.

Mahakala Ritual

Mahakala also called "the Great Black", Lord of time and transcendent wisdom.

Mahakala is classically black in colour. Just as all colours are absorbed and dissolved in black, all names and forms are said to blend into those of Mahakala, symbolising its all-encompassing and complete nature. Black can also represent the total absence of colour, and again in this case it signifies the nature of Mahakala as ultimate or absolute reality.

Mahakala is almost always represented with a crown of five skulls, which represent the transformation of the five kleshas (afflictions) in the Five Wisdoms of Buddha.

Mahakala's face is represented with a belligerent attitude, prominent fangs and an exorbitant gaze. Mahakala is the symbol of the force that destroys the illusion that hinders the attainment of enlightenment.

The mantra of Mahakala Bernachen is OM SHRI MAHAKALA YAKSHA BETALI HUNG DZA.

Sangye Menla Ritual

Sangye Menla, "Master Healer" or Medicine Buddha, is one of the mahāyāna Buddhas of the past, who became an emanation of Shakyamuni specialising in material and spiritual healing and protection against calamities.

Like Akshobhya, Sangye Menla is a master of an "eastern paradise" and can form a pair with Amitābha, master of the "western paradise" Sukhāvatī or Dewatchen.

On his left hand is a bowl filled with medicinal substances. According to certain texts, the bowl, carved out of a block of beryl, has twelve sides recalling the twelve great wishes made by Sangye Menla for the good of all beings. He is regarded as the Medicine Buddha because his compassion extends to all suffering of beings. In his right hand, the Buddha holds a stem of arura, a plant considered to be the queen of medicinal plants. Indeed, each of its parts is attributed powerful and specific healing virtues.

It bears the major marks and minor signs of a fully awakened manifestation of Nirmanakaya. The perfection of the Buddha's state is expressed even in the characteristics of his body, to which 32 major marks and 80 minor signs are traditionally attributed.

The Tantric meditation of Sangye Menla was introduced to Tibet in the 8th century by Shantarakshita. This meditation was synthesised in the 19th century by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Thaye.
His mantra, TÉYATA OM BEKANZÉ BEKANZÉ MAHABÉKANZÉ RAZA SAMUDGATEZÉ SOHA, is considered to have great power against physical illness or to purify negative karma.

Green Tara Ritual

Green Tara is one of the 21 forms of Tara, giving comfort and protection against hazards.

Its green color is that of the awakened activity of the acting compassion. Tara is also the consort of Buddha Amoghasiddhi, who presides over the family of "action". The green also indicates that Tara acts at wind speed for the good of those who pray her. For this reason, it is often called the Swift.

The symbolism of her posture abounds in the same direction:

the left leg: folded, denotes that it is no longer subject to internal disturbances;
the right leg: already half opened, indicates that it is ready to get up to go rescue the beings; thus, Tara, while totally free from the imperfections of samsara, remains there to help all those who suffer: she relieves them of their temporal difficulties and, spiritually, guides them towards liberation, the end of all pain ;
with the right hand, it makes the mudra of the gift, meaning that it grants the ordinary accomplishments and the sublime fulfillment;
the left hand in the refuge mudra: its thumb and ring finger touch to symbolize the union of skillful means and knowledge; his three other fingers are erected and represent the Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha;
the lotuses with which the stems are held in the hands indicate that all the qualities of the Realization have fully blossomed in it.

Her mantra is: OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA

Chenrezig ritual

Chenrezig, "he who looks with light eyes". He is the Tibetan incarnation of Avalokitésvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion and is considered the protector of Tibet. Chenrezig or Avalokitesvara with four arms is the most popular form of the deity.

Its symbolism, as described by Bokar Rinpoche, is as follows:

the white colour of his body: he is totally pure, free of all veils;
a single face: the essence of all phenomena is of a single flavour;
the 4 arms: the 4 unlimited feelings (love, compassion, joy, equanimity);
the two legs crossed in the vajra posture: it does not remain in the extremes of nirvana for oneself and samsara; it unites compassion and emptiness;
the jewel held in joined hands: it accomplishes the good of all beings;
the rosary in the right hand: it pulls all beings towards liberation;
the lotus in the left hand: it possesses the knowledge on which compassion for all beings is based; moreover, just as a lotus grows from the mud without its flower being in any way defiled, Avalokita works in the world without being tainted by its imperfections;
the doe's skin on his shoulder: the legendary kindness of the doe symbolises the thought turned towards the good of beings;
the various jewels: the richness of the qualities of his awakened spirit;
the silks of five colours: the five wisdoms.
Above the deity's head or in his bun is sometimes represented a small Amitabha, to remind us that Avalokita belongs to the Padma family over which this Buddha reigns.

His mantra is OM MANI PADME HUNG. The mantra om mani padme hum is considered to be the distinctive seal of Buddhism in Tibet where it is omnipresent. It is found on prayer banners, mani stones, inscribed on the mountains, on the doorsteps of houses and monasteries, frequently chanted by pilgrims chanting rosaries or operating prayer wheels (mani khorlo) enshrining the mantra printed thousands of times.

Chöd Ritual

Chöd is a spiritual practice found mainly in the Yundrung Bön tradition as well as in the Nyingma and Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It is a method of cutting through obstacles (i.e. ignorance, anger, and especially dualism, especially the dualism of the sense of self as different from others) and allows the practitioner to remain in a natural state free from fear .
According to Mahayana Buddhists, emptiness is the ultimate wisdom that allows us to understand that all things have no inherent existence. Chöd combines the philosophy of prajñāpāramitā with specific meditation methods and a tantric ritual. The chod practitioner seeks to harness the power of fear through activities such as rituals in cemeteries and the visualisation of the offering of one's body at a tantric feast to test one's understanding of emptiness.
Chöd literally means "cutting through". He cuts through shackles and obscurations, sometimes called "demons" or "gods". Examples of demons are ignorance, anger and, in particular, the dualism of perceiving the self as having intrinsic meaning, contrary to the Buddhist doctrine of anatta (non-self). This is done through a powerful meditation ritual that includes "an astonishing array of visualizations, songs, music and prayers, it engages every aspect of being and brings about a powerful transformation of the inner landscape.

OFFERING RITUAL

It is very useful for your meditation to have a special room or space reserved for your practice. The main elements that often come into your meditation place are an altar, your meditation chair and a text table.
The altar is a special place that holds your sacred objects, images and texts that inspire your practice.
Bokar Rinpoche wrote that in order to reach the ultimate Enlightenment, it is necessary to assemble the two accumulations: merit and wisdom. The accumulation of merit is therefore of paramount importance because without it, no accumulation of wisdom would be possible. The two accumulations are interdependent and the accumulation of merit operates in the field of "means" while the accumulation of wisdom operates in the field of "knowledge".
As beginners, merit of accumulation is the easiest form of accumulation to work with and it allows us to progress quickly along the path. Offerings are a form of accumulation of merits.
The most common offerings are: the offering of saffron water and the seven offerings.
The water offerings consist of seven bowls to be filled (and emptied) each day with saffron water, following a certain ritual.

water (water is sometimes considered as two offerings: water used as a drink and water used as cleaning/purification)
flowers
incense
light
scented water
food
music
