ROKPA Italy

The project ROKPA is committed where humanitarian aid is particularly difficult, but nevertheless completely essential.

ROKPA's work focuses mainly on education, medicine and food/cost of living. Teaching people to help themselves is the major concern of ROKPA. The organisation knows that education is the most effective way to help the poor to escape poverty and to protect himself from exploitation and abuse.

Therefore ROKPA prepares children and disadvantaged adults to take control of their lives through its training projects.

Rokpa Women's Workshop and the-dharma-store.com (TDS)

To enable poor women and their children to foresee a better future, ROKPA offers women trainings to become seamstresses. With the promise of a job to follow, a fair wage saves them from a life in the street and allows their children to go to school.

The social position of Nepalese women coming from the lowest levels of society is marked by dependency and largely influences the lives of their children. Women are usually married at a very young and very early after their wedding, they have children with no prospect of education. The higher the number of children, the higher the chances that these women will be abandoned by their husbands. Without education, they have few opportunities to earn a living for themselves and their children. That's why they often end up on the street begging or in low-paying jobs where they are exploited without having time to care for their children.

Since 1996, ROKPA offers training opportunities to these poor women. In a specialized workshop, women learn to design, sew and make useful and quality fabrics. Through this, they can work with a living wage, which saves their lives and allow their children to access school. The members of the TDS team are supporting Rokpa's activities for almost 15 years.

A lot of products sold on the-dharma-store.com such as meditation cushions, hands protection, etc. are made by Rokpa women's workshop in Nepal.
